How to wash your car, guide for self maintenance

Basic step by step

Here’s a simple, safe, and effective step-by-step guide to washing your car at home without scratching the paint or wasting water.

1. Park in the shade & cool the car

•  Never wash a hot car (hot panels cause soap to dry too fast and leave spots).

•  Choose a shaded spot or wait until late afternoon/evening.

2. Gather your supplies

•  Two buckets (one with car shampoo, one with plain water)

•  Grit guards (optional but highly recommended – they trap dirt at the bottom)

•  Quality microfiber wash mitt (at least 2)

•  Car-specific shampoo (pH-neutral, no dish soap!)

•  Hose with a shut-off nozzle or pressure washer (gentle setting)

•  Wheel cleaner & dedicated wheel brush

•  Microfiber drying towels or a blower (optional but better than chamois)

3. Rinse the car thoroughly

•  Use a strong stream of water from top to bottom.

•  Knock off loose dirt, bird droppings, and bugs.

4. Clean the wheels & tires first (always!)

•  Spray wheel cleaner (non-acid for clear-coated wheels).

•  Use a separate brush or mitt only for wheels – they’re the dirtiest part.

•  Scrub tires, barrels, and behind spokes.

•  Rinse completely before moving to the paint.

5. The “Two-Bucket” wash method (prevents scratches)

•  Bucket 1: Car shampoo mixed with water (follow bottle instructions).

•  Bucket 2: Plain water (rinse bucket).

•  Soak your mitt in the shampoo bucket.

•  Wash the car from top to bottom in straight lines (not circles), doing one panel at a time (roof → windows → upper panels → lower panels).

•  After each panel, rinse the mitt in the plain-water bucket to release trapped dirt, then reload with shampoo.

•  Never let the mitt touch the ground.

6. Rinse the car completely

•  Use a gentle “sheeting” rinse (open hose, no nozzle) so water flows off in sheets – this reduces spots.

7. Dry immediately (prevents water spots)

Best options:

•  Electric blower (leaf blower or car blower) – touchless

•  Waffle-weave microfiber drying towel – pat and drag gently Avoid: Old bath towels or chamois that can scratch.

8. Final touches (optional but recommended)

•  Quick-detailer spray + clean microfiber to remove any remaining streaks.

•  Clean windows inside & out.

•  Apply tire dressing if desired.

Safety & eco tips

•  Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and appropriate footwear ( do not jet wash feet, sounds stupid but I’ve seen people do this )

That’s it! Done correctly, this method keeps your paint safe and swirl-free for years.
